Chicago 2016 Bid Eliminated in First Round by IOC

Chicago 2016 was eliminated in the first round of IOC voting.

Chicago 2016 was eliminated in the first round of IOC voting.

In a major surprise, Chicago’s bid to land the 2016 Olympic Games ended in the first round of the International Olympic Committee’s voting.

Tokyo also has been eliminated.

Rio de Janeiro and Madrid remain, with Rio projected as the favorite. The Olympic Games have never been held in South America, and Rio will also play host to the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament.

The winning bid announcement is expected to be made at 11:57 a.m. Central Time and will be broadcast live at an event in Daley Plaza.

Chicago 2016 Olympic Presentation Complete

Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid made their presentations to the International Olympic Committee Friday in Copenhagen.

The IOC begins several rounds of voting at 10:10 a.m. Central Time on Friday. The city with the lowest vote total is eliminated in each round, until a winner is determined. The announcement is expected to be made at 11:57 a.m. Central Time and will be broadcast live at an event in Daley Plaza.

Protestors march outside Chicago's City Hall in opposition to the city's 2016 Olympic bid.

About 250 protestors marched outside of Chicago’s City Hall on Tuesday night in opposition to the city’s bid to land the 2016 Olympic Games.

Many of the protestors were from the group No Games Chicago, which has built a Web site and sent documents to the International Olympic Committee explaining why the group opposes the city’s bid.
